Dorset Sheep

PHOTOGRAPH INFO

These photographs were taken this week at the Middletown Grange Fair in Wrightstown, Bucks County. This is the 58th year for the fair, a very popular event which brings the local agricultural community together for five days of fun, good food, entertainment, and competition. The contests bring in over 4000 items ranging from cows to cucumbers to cakes to quilts!

This is my third year as a 4-H judge at the fair. I don't judge the animals. I judge the kids' projects which include photography, woodworking, sewing, bread-making and candy-making, among other things. It's great fun and I really enjoy meeting and interviewing the talented kids who make up the local 4-H clubs.

With the exception of the Belgian horse, all of the animals pictured here are in this year's Grange Fair competition. The animal in the top photo, Freddy's Yorkshire Hog, belongs to my neighbor Freddy (who happens to be Jakey's cousin, for those of you following along). Freddy is 15 and raises hogs and Red Angus cattle at his grandfather's farm near my house.

The Dorset sheep in the bottom photo are wearing coats and hoods to keep themselves clean before they enter the competition ring.

Post-processing: Shot with the Canon 85mm f/1.2L lens as follows:

1) 85mm, ISO 1000, shutter speed 1/1250s and aperture f/1.2.
2) 85mm, ISO 1000, shutter speed 1/8000s and aperture f/1.8.
3) 85mm, ISO 1000, shutter speed 1/1250s and aperture f/1.8.
4) 85mm, ISO 1000, shutter speed 1/1000s and aperture f/1.2.
5) 85mm, ISO 1000, shutter speed 1/8000s and aperture f/1.2.

Converted the RAW file to monochrome using the gradient map, basic curves adjustment, slight color balancing for tone.

Thank you for visiting Durham Township!

My son shows Dorset sheep at Middletown Grange every year. These could very well be our sheep. They look awlfully familiar.

Lovely shot. Do the sheep mind wearing superhero costumes?
